Introduction

EditMentor is not your typical video editing mentoring and teaching tool. EditMentor is a new unique form of teaching creative techniques, digital art, and much more! with a mission is to empower new digital creators and help them overcome their creative weaknesses.

Through simple and manageable interfaces EditMentor helps users feel more at ease and help build up their creative characters, they focus on two types of students, the ones that want to enhance and develop their editing and storytelling techniques; and the others who are completely new in the video editing world and are here to start learning everything from scratch.

Challange

Considering the number of online courses, and the number of competitors in the market, it is necessary to think also about something original in design so that the service can stand out from the crowd.

  • learn how to use the editing platforms
  • Onboarding mentors to LMS (Learning Management System)
  • Provide teachers a smooth and easy lesson creation experience
  • To ensure video editors are comfortable and satisfied with the whole user experience and interface
  • Adaptble interface for (AVID and Adobe Premiere Pro)

Task

The task at hand was very vague. EditMentor offers two different services to learn video editing techniques, and master two different platforms which are AVID and Adobe Premiere Pro. Create an interface that did not confuse students between the two editing platforms and well as not bring confusion regarding the lessons they are attending, whether it was a beginner’s course or advanced storytelling development lessons. According to these purposes, we distinguished the following basic functions:

  • Explanations with visuals and text
  • Identify what learning techniques are offered
  • Add both AVID and Adobe Premiere Pro interfaces in a clear and precise way
  • A clear understanding of the values of each course/lesson provided
  • Dashboard for teachers to follow up and rate their student submissions
  • Space for collaboration between students and teachers
  • Scalable design to support future product evolution and features
  • A website that clearly presents Enditmentor

Research

Based on online reviews and user interviews, we learned that video editors prefer using customized keyboard shortcuts while editing to help speed up the process, also that users tend to dose off during class sessions.
The lessons had to be interactive and engaging. The main focus of lesson plans was the students enrolling in a class, participating, and completing their tasks in a smooth process.

Process

Started with working on the site from the research of existing products and the concept of user interface and experience. Since online teaching and video editing practices are best made on a desktop, the decision was made, to begin with, designing the web and tablet interface which was supposed to be more widely used and simpler for the target users.

Based on the review and analysis, the following was planned:

  • Keyboard shortcuts
  • Gamification and awards
  • Lesson plan flow
